What is a maternity clinic or birth centre?
A maternity clinic focuses on pregnancy, birth and postnatal care rather than general medicine. Care is led by qualified midwives instead of an obstetrician, and the setting is deliberately domestic rather than clinical. Birth centre and birthing centre describe the same thing, and you will see the American spelling “center” used interchangeably online.
What to expect in one:

- Continuous support during labour rather than shift handovers
- Freedom to move and choose your own birthing positions

Antenatal care at a maternity clinic
Antenatal care is the regular monitoring you receive through pregnancy. At a midwife-led clinic it typically includes routine check-ups and vitals, fetal heartbeat monitoring, first trimester screening, pregnancy education, and birth preparation.
The main practical difference from a hospital antenatal clinic is time. Appointments are longer and you see the same team each visit, which makes it easier to raise things you might not mention in a rushed consultation.

Who a birth centre suits
Midwife-led birth centres are for low-risk pregnancies. That covers most healthy pregnancies, but not all of them.
- Good fit: a healthy single pregnancy, no significant medical conditions, no previous birth complications, and a preference for natural birth with minimal intervention.
- Not a fit: twins or more, pregnancy-related conditions such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes needing close management, previous C-section requiring specialist assessment, or any pregnancy flagged as high risk.
A reputable clinic will assess this honestly at your first visit and tell you if a hospital is the safer setting.
When hospital care is needed
If complications develop during pregnancy or labour, you are transferred to hospital doctors. A clear transfer plan should be part of your care from the first appointment, not something arranged on the day.
Ask any clinic you are considering: which hospital do you transfer to, how far is it, who travels with me, and who makes the call. If they cannot answer those four questions clearly, keep looking.
How to choose a maternity clinic
- Check registration and credentials. Midwives should be registered with the South African Nursing Council. Ask, and verify.
- Confirm the transfer protocol. As above, get the four answers in plain terms.
- Visit before you book. Photographs flatter every facility. Go and see the room you would actually give birth in.
- Ask for pricing in writing. A clinic that publishes fixed pricing is easier to plan around than one that quotes case by case.
- Speak to previous clients. Ask the clinic to put you in touch with one, or read independent reviews.
- Check the postnatal follow-up. Find out which check-ups are included and which are billed separately.
What a birth centre costs
Pricing varies between clinics, so compare like for like and ask what is excluded.
